Family & Divorce Mediation Training is certified by the NC Dispute Resolution Commission under Rule 8 of the Family Financial Settlement Procedures Program that operates in the District Courts of North Carolina. It is also certified by the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) for the basic forty hour family mediation training required by those who wish to become advanced practitioner members of that organization's family section. This court ordered program in North Carolina focuses on the financial aspects of the marital dissolution: property division, spousal support and child support, although child care issues may also be included at the election of the parties.
This course is designed to serve beginning mediation students and those who have completed other mediation training as well. It will equip students to begin a family mediation practice either in the court ordered program or in a private practice of family mediation designed to help families move through divorce without resort to the courts. Subjects related to the legal and social aspects of family life and dissolution are introduced in addition to those related to the topic of mediation and facilitation. Some of those include: domestic violence and protection, child development, and family dynamics.
We are pleased that the course is led by two mediators who are dually certified by the NC Dispute Resolution Commission and who are Advanced Practioner Members of ACR. They are J. Anderson Little (widely recognized as one of the most experienced mediators and teachers of mediators in North Carolina) and Celia O'Briant (Licensed Family Counselor, whose educational background is in the area of early childhood education. Celia is the past president of the NC Association of Professional Family Mediators).
